   May Feature:  Vegetables

A few vegetables need the pollination of male & female plants to produce edibles. Squash is an example of a commonly grown plant that needs pollination. Both the male and female flowers must be in bloom at the same time. Get more tips for vegetable gardening HERE.

Chrysanthemum,mums,Gardener,chrysanthemums,gardening,Morden Mums,mum,growing,planting,caring for plants

Chrysanthemums are stunning in Fall gardens, with flowers in all sizes and colors but blue. There are several varieties of chrysanthemum. The height of mums varies from lower cushion mums to Football mums which are several feet tall. Chrysanthemum can be started by seeds, root divisions, stem cuttings or starter plants.

You will need:
Morden mums starter plants, fertilizer and compost.

  1. Hardy morden mums are one of my favorite. It is not recommended to start morden mums from seed. They are hybrid and do not come in true seed form.

  2. Transplant morden mums into fertile well watered soil, about a foot apart.

  3. Water well during dry periods. Mums have shallow roots and needs lots of moisture.

  4. Soak plants heavily just before freeze-up. Apply mulch around the base of the plant.

  5. Divide every two years for best flowering. Discard the centers of mums and plant new pieces. Centers die out after about two years.

    Tips for Chrysanthemums

  1. Buy small plants with rich green foliage. Avoid plants with brown or yellow leaves, as they have probably haven't received enough water or have been in their pots for too long.

  2. Divide mums regularly and you will end up with many plants.

  3. Be sure to choose a color you are particularly fond of for both your garden and bouquets.

  4. Mums will last about two weeks in a vase.
