   July Feature:  Sage Advice

There are thousands of different species of perennial, biennial and annual salvias. Salvias are a member of the mint family. Most are fast growing, hardy, trouble free. The best way to grow sage is to buy a couple plants and take cuttings. If you grow sage from seeds it will take about two years before you can use it. Get more sage advice HERE.

Lily-of-the-valley produces rich fragrant white blooms for the shade. The bulbs are often dug up in autumn and stored for replanting in spring. You may have to do this if you live in colder climate. Here on Vancouver island in Canada, most bulbs will survive the winter just fine.

"Use Lily of the valley as a groundcover in low traffic areas. "

Tips for Growing Lily of the valley:

  • If buying lily of the valley in pots, buy small plants with rich green foliage in individual pots. Avoid plants with brown or yellow leaves. They have probably received too much or not enough water or have been in their pots for too long.

  • The Lily-of-the-Valley's pips, flowers, and berries are POISONOUS. Remove berry stalks before they ripen.

  • If you choose to overwinter your bulbs, you should cut the stems back once they have finished blooming and apply a light fertilizer and mulch for frost protection and more prolific blooms next season.

  • Lily-of-the-valley multiply rapidly. Dig them up and and pot them as gifts for your friends.
