Congratulations to Rita Porter of Hawaii The winner of the contest in September.

On the Topic of Zucchini: "Zucchini is right at home in ratatouille and quiche, no matter what recipe you use. I recall my father used to pick the flowers, dip them in egg and bread crumbs and fry in olive oil. It was a nostalgic treat for him, and has become one for me now" - Rita

August Contest Winner
Congratulations to Jenni Faith of Oklahoma The winner of the contest in August.

Harvest Time Rewards: "One of my favorite ways to use extra tomatoes that are starting to get squishy is to make homemade spaghetti sauce. Puree them in the blender along with a handful of fresh basil and oregano. (You can also use dried herbs.) Add a little sugar and red wine or grape juice. Pour into large, heavy saucepan and simmer over low heat, stirring occasionally until thickened. Can be used immediately or frozen"

July Contest Winner
Congratulations to Holly of PEI The winner of the contest in July.

Holly's tip for Herbs from the garden: "herbs i feel are very beneficial because they make food taste so good. My mother took a heartache a little while ago and when they told her she could not eat salt she did not know what she was going to do. She did some reading and talked to others who told her about different kind of herbs and how when u start to use them u do not miss the salt, so i believe they are very important in every day life and each one of us should get to know them better"

Contest Winner - May 2008
Congratulations to Kae Bruch of Roanoke, VA The winner of the contest in May.

Kae's creative idea for Gardening with Children: "Grow vine vegetables over a chicken wire tunnel - they like to see their tunnel become covered over during the summer and like picking the vegetables as when they mature. Good vegetables for this are cucumbers and beans"

Contest Winner - April 2008
Congratulations to Sally C of Guilderland, NY The winner of the contest in April.

Sally's Contest Entry: "I like to use flattened out cardboard boxes around the plants and in between the rows of vegies. This keeps the weeds down and also provides a nice clean surface for the vegies when they are so heavy on the plant that they rest on the ground. This also helps prevent slug damage"
