April Contest:
Congratulations to John of Westchester County, NY - Last month's lucky winner of the Mystery Prize (A pair of "Snail" Patio Candleholders and a "Snail" Metal Garden Stake ) from Mailorder Garden.

John's Garden Remedies:

"Cut back your weeds around your garden as they harbor bugs and bring bugs to your garden.

1 1/2 tablespoons of Fine garlic powder desolved in a 1 quart water (plus a drop of dish soap )spray bottle applied once a week to vegetable plants or after a rain storm will discourage 90 percent of all insects.

Marigolds attract pollinators while discouraging pesty bugs. You'll be especially amazed by an increased tomatoe fruit yeild which will be made possible by putting marigolds along the outside border of your garden.

Start bagging your grass clippings and apply them around your garden vegetables as a mulch (note wait a few weeks after applying any grass fertilizers before you do this as they contain weed killers that may harm your vegetables). Grass mulch can be applied to all path areas. This will slow weed growth and increase moisture in the soil. It gets compressed quickly so make don't worry about how much you put on the ground.

Put a small bird house or 2 near or in your garden he'll take care of a lot of those bugs.

Soaker hoses save flowers, reduces top soil errosion.

Inexpensive inflatable owls can be found at your local Walmart... put it on a post near the garden and laugh at all those silly rabbits who will be too afraid to enter your garden. Move the owl 2 times a weeks so they don't get used to it as being a dummy. Or duct tape a stick with a plastic (paper) plate to its base. The wind will make the owl shake in the wind a little."
