GUNNERA MANICATA: A giant Rhubarb-like plant

  • One day while visiting one of the smaller islands just off our shoreline (Protection Island); I came across what I thought was a giant rhubarb plant. After a little investigation I learned that it was not rhubarb at all, but a perennial called Gunnera Manicata.

  • Gunnera Manicata grows best in zones 7-10. This giant plant loves humidity, moist soil and a light shade.

  • The Gunnera Manicata will seed in the either the fall or spring and can grow over 6 feet tall
