Tamara Leonard of NC - Jack-O-Lanterns look cool, so I would suggest cutting at the bottom instead of the top to decorate, and use a battery-operated light inside to reduce the chance of fire (and that stinky "cooking pumpkin" smell that eminates from those that use hot candles inside to light them.

Debbie of Valrico, Florida - Our family secret for Halloween pumpkins uses empty soup cans. Take the top and bottom of the soup can and cut four small slits in them. Bend the slits back and put one lid on the bottom of your carved pumpkin and one on the bottom of the lid of your carved pumpkin. Then when you use candles the light doesn't burn the pumpkin but reflect off the soup can lids.
