Pick up all leaves and faded flowers and add them to the compost. These are a favorite hiding spot for slugs and snails.

Turn and dampen your compost often. Flies will breed in the grass clippings if you do not turn it regularly.

Laurie of Rescue, CA - "This was my first house and my first yards since I've lived in apartments for the past 10 years. I became very interested in gardening because the front and backyards looked terrible due to neglect. This year I planted a wide variety of wild flowers / perrenials and annuals and learned a lot about how to take care the plants with Sunsets Western garden book. The garden beds look great.

Some of my favorite flowers to look at are the Blue Marguerite, Osteospernum, Daylilies, and Wild Strawberries. I love the Blue Marguerties because they are easy to grow, spread rapidly and hold on to the blooms. The Osteospernums bring sunshine on a warm day and seem to smile when you look at them. I have the bright orange variety. Daylilies are very new to me and I have discovered they take very little to multiply and require minimal care as does the Wild Strawberries and produce beautiful blooms.

My biggest tip is to know your soil before you plant anything in the ground. Any plant needs water, food, air, adequate spacing, and some level of sunshine to grow. Clearly understanding your plants soil needs is essential for the optiumum growth and development of the plant. Like a house, "location, location, location" is also essential along with proper nutrients, sunshine, and water. It's important for the care of any plant to take proper observations so that you can best know to maintain is upkeep."

Gerry of Pennsylvania - "If cats are getting into your garden try using some orange extract. Cats are known to hate the scent of orange! Just put about 1 teaspoon on some cotton guaze or cotton balls inside a small piece of aluminum foil and wrap it so the scent can come out but no rain can get in. This should keep our furry little friends out of your flowers. "
