Pick the faded flowers off fuchsia as they start to wilt. This will force more blooms. Control aphids by washing with water hose.

Feed roses with a complete fertilizer in June. Weed well. Remove faded blooms and sucker shoots as they come. Watch for aphids, mildew and blackspot.

Dig up and divide over crowded clumps of Primroses after bloom. Keep them well watered after planting.

Water container plants daily, as needed. Feed every two weeks.

Perennial flowers for next year can be seeded at the end of June.

Fran of St. Charles - "Try growing a "Knockout" rose. It's 100% disease resistant, stays compact (3'x3'), slightly fragrant, and blooms all summer long, until frost. It's bright pink-red color can be seen from a distance. Needs no winter protection. It's no-fuss!"

Ginger of Jayess, Mississippi - "Lisianthus is a wonderful, ever blooming purple flower"

Wanda of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada - "I planted Purple Wave Petunias this year for the first time. The blooms can reach 5-6 inches across and are gorgeous. I can hardly wait to see my first blossom!"

Mar of Canada - "Finally, after a dozen years or so,wanting to mass plant New Guinea Impatiens, they have finally become practical to plant. I was amazed at how many varieties and how inexpensive they are this year. The garden looks spectacular. I thought perhaps I had over-purchased, but with all of the compliments, I'm glad I did. They are so hardy.The blooms seem to last longer than ordinary impatiens and they are twice as big with that elegant dark green leaf to showcase them. I hope I wiil be able to save and start the seeds next February. If so, I'll have some to give away, nice thought."

Anthony of Fresno, CA - "A hedge of Petunias was something new I tried and it turned out beautiful. Advice is don't let plants suffer for water, feed regularly and keep weeds out before they begin to take away nourishment from the flower plant itself."

I had grown them when I lived in the UK and loved their little perky faces, so was interested to see what they thought of Illinois! They love it here and tolerate our blazing sunny days in their stride. It is nice to see I am not the only one to transplant well!!"

Mary of Donora, Pa - "My favorite and unusual flower would be flowering Tobacco. Althought they are delicate to the touch the blooms (upside down small umbrella shoots), are capable of releasing fragrance detectable from yards away on a humid summer night. Also to keep deer at bay my tip would be to plant strongly scented plants such as Rosemary or Oregano. These deterrents can also be placed among appealing plants in a flowerbed to confuse the deer in the hope they go elsewhere. Some proven annuals & perennials that deer avoid include are English wallflower, flowering Tobacco, Heliotrope, and lily-of-the-valley. Plants with prickly leaves often are good too."

George of Monongahela, Pa - "Try some "Straw Flowers" or Everlastings as they are commonly called. If you never saw this flower it kind of resembles a Zinnia or Gerbera Daisy and for your flower garden if you have snails a copper strip around the plant being attacked will repel them. It works!."

Lynn of Seneca, SC - "My favorite flower / plant is the night-blooming cereus. Every year when it is time to bloom we have a party. I even found a 1950's tablecloth with the flower on it to use for decoration. This plant only blooms once a year and the flower lasts until dawn. A most unusual plant but rewarding to those successful in producing the blooms. If you are lucky enough to have yours bud, get the camera ready and invite the neighbors to arrive around dusk. "

Mary of Redding, CA - "Shasta Daisys. We've always had a hot summer here in Redding, Californa; but this year has been starting off with a real bang with temps over 100 degrees on quite a few days now, even though we're still in June. (109 and 105 several times already). I mention this because the trees around my garden have been recently trimmed (butchered is a better word) by the management of this complex. Although I try to stay on top of my gardening (watering/weeding/fertilizing), the heat is starting to do it's damage. My beautiful roses are drying up almost as soon as they bloom. (My back yard shade is GONE)! I'm waiting to see how my Shasta Daisys are going to fair. One plant is almost gone. The rest are just about ready to bloom. An elderly lady lives down the street from me and has beautiful Shasta Daisys. We'll see how mine fare.

My tip to share...? Don't let a crazy old man who thinks he owns the place get ahold of the trees surrounding your residence."
