"This is the month of shortest nights
And garden scents are heavy and sweet
Now the rose blooms, red, pink and white
Bright, glowing in the evening heat"

Weed Prevention Techniques
- Prevention begins with learning to identify your weeds.
- Learn to hoe and hand weed effectively.
- Do frequent "weed checks" in your garden.
- Mulch exposed soil and pathways early to stop weeds before they start
Annual Weeds:
- Annual weeds produce thousands of seeds. They are carried in the wind, by people and animals and each seed develops into more weeds.
- To break this cycle, don't ever allow annual weeds to go to seed. Get rid of them when they first begin sprouting. (usually after a rain)
"EACH single plant can contain up to 15,000 seeds"
Perennial Weeds:
- Perennial weeds need to be dug up by the root. If you don't get all the root, the weed will grow back.
- They grow on reserve energy until the new shoots reach sunlight.
- If you can continue to catch these before they get to high they will use up all there reserve energy and will eventually die.
"Eat your weeds! - Dandelions contain more vitamin A than carrots"
Weed Control that Works:
- Save grass clippings from lawn mower.
- Spread a 2 to 3 inch layer of grass clippings under taller established plants.
- This will prevent weeds and add organic matter to soil. It's similar to adding peat moss to your garden. "
- Glen Hillhouse Jr
"In the new moon of June or full moon of August, mow Canada thistles with a scythe and they will die to the last root. " - Lester H. Morris
Get Rid of Perrenial Weeds:
- "Pour boiling water on poison ivy and other perennial weeds with stubborn root systems that are difficult to pull out of the ground. Boiling water will kill annual weeds as well. It literally burns the leaf tissue. Be careful not to pour it on your garden plants or on yourself."
- Rodale Press Inc.
This method may be harmful to worms and other beneficials around the soil surface. There will certainly be no long term dangers to the environment.
