   January Feature:  Birds

January is a great time to think about other aspects of the garden. Birds can be especially significant in a garden. Besides ridding it of harmful insects and even some small rodents, birds add a certain charm to any garden. Get creative... More tips for birds HERE.

Winter Wildlife

  • In January my garden looks somewhat bare but there are a few places that I enjoy visiting where nature's magnificence is always present.

  • A favorite spot is Cathedral Grove, the world's oldest living forest. This area is located right here on Vancouver Island - aprox. a one hour drive from my home in Nanaimo BC.

  • There is also a butterfly garden and bird aviary located "en route" to Cathedral Grove which is a great place to go for a quick cure from the winter blues.

  • There are thousands of different types of birds, butterflies and moths that are always entertaining visitors and many are great for your garden. If you want to attract more wildlife, now is a good time to decide what new additions you want to incorporate.

  • To attract butterflies, keep in mind that they like plants, trees and shrubs with lots of nectar as well as host plants and food sources for their larvae (caterpillars). They also need plenty of water so you may want to place a bird bath or pond in your garden to attract the birds and butterflies that are common to your area.

  • A few plants that are great for attracting butterflies include: Sweet William, Foxglove, Lupins, Columbine, Fennel, Bee Balm, Pincushion Flower, Butterfly bush, Lavender, Honey Suckle, Petunia, Purple Smoke Tree, Lilac, Phlox... only to name a few.

  • Some of the plants for common ( "pre-butterfly" ) caterpillars are parsley, dill, fennel, willows, dogwood, blueberries, aster, snapdragons and passion vines.
