Plant the chilled bulbs of Triumph Tulips in the garden.

You can find an incredible number of colorful varieties of gladioli in catalogues at this time of the year.

Watch for signs of soft or moldy bulbs if stored over winter. If they have started to rot or decay, remove them and throw them out. (This can occur if moisture gets into storage area.)

Plant Persian Ranunculus indoors in containers for an early show of indoor color.

We have a lot of birds visit our backyard despite the fact that we have no trees. They really do seem to enjoy themselves!"

Debra of Moorefield, WV   "Yesterday I watched as 4 female cardinals and one male cardinal came onto my porch to eat at the cats food bown of dry food. We had just put a new feeder hanging up with bird seed but they still preferred the cat food. The cats sit back and let the birds eat their fill every day. I also watched two bluejays, several snowbirds and one sapsucker. I enjoy feeding the birds and watching them eat during the winter months. During the summer months I wake up to the sound of the birds singing right outside my window. I love the baby birds and usually end up helping at least one young one that has fallen out of the nest each summer. The funniest thing I ever saw with birds was when the squirrels (I have a nest in front of my house and a nest in back of my house both very close to my home) to be exact approximately 4 bluejays got upset with a squirrel one day and chased that poor squirrel until I had to chase them off him. He was literally scared to death. He had run until he could not run anymore and was panting he was so tired. I felt so sorry for him that I went down to help him. I never did find out what all the excitement was about."

They seemed to mingle well with the sparrows, wrens, doves, finches, and mockingbirds. I hear they live up in the White Mountains in the summer and come down here in the cooler months. Surprising since they are native to in Tanzania, Africa!!! "

Holly of Devils Lake North Dakota   "While on vacation in Montana we were enjoying a lovely breakfast in our rented cabin when BANG! A small songbird had hit the large picture window. My husband went out to see what he could do and was afraid to leave the bird there in the dirt with an obvious headache. He was afraid the bird would be very vulnerable to the natural predators in this wooded area. We put the bird on a piece of firewood stacked on the corner of the deck and watched him on and off most of the day. We named him FRED after the movie title "Drop Dead Fred" because of the way he hit the window and dropped to the ground. By the end of the day the poor bird with the hurting head had recovered well enough to hop off the deck and eventually fly away. he sat high in a tree near the house until the next morning but we watched him wing his way through the trees by 10AM next day."

Roopali of New Delhi, INDIA   "My favourite memory regarding the birds is during my middle school time (6-8 years age). One day in a bright sunny morning I saw a sparrow severely injured came just down to my feet. At that time I was not very sure about what to do now. However, I took the bird to my school and asked my favourite teacher to heel the wounds of sparrow. She really done a great job by applying some ointment on the wounds.I kept that sparrow for at least one month and took care of all his/her requirements. When the wounds are completely heeled I free him/her to the clear, blue sky"

Jamie of Charlottetown, PE   "Well, I guess my only 'bird' story would be when I liberated five or six chickens from a ghastly living enviroment at a local egg farm. I had bought the hens, and had let them roam free at my former country home. While at the farm, they had gotten so stressed by living conditions that they would pluck their own feathers out (as if they were always molting). Once I got them out of their three hens to a tiny pen situation, they grew all their feathers back, and individual personalities formed for each hen. They supplied us with a daily supply of the greatest eggs, and with endless amusement as they all ran across the yard :)"
