Start Hoeing or pulling weeds now to avoid a rush later. While the ground is soggy, pulling weeds is easier.

Make sure your trees & shrubs have no broken branches after any wind or snow storms. Cut them off as close as possible to main branch.

Open the ventilators on the lee side of your greenhouse as it begins to warm up outside but avoid creating drafts.

Create new rock gardens in sunny positions. Not under trees. Shade and leaves falling on the plants in fall will harm them. The stones must slightly tip back to ensure proper drainage.

If you're cleaning out the garden shed and come across some chemicals that you no longer want; DO NOT pour them down a drain, or toss them in the garbage or they may contaminate the water ! Consult your local authority.

MaryAnn of Blackstone, Ma - "To make certain that the seeds I deadheaded last year are good, I moisten a paper towel and lay 20 seeds on half the towel; folding over the other half to cover it. I do not let the towel dry out and do not place it in the sun. After 5 days I open the toweling - if 5 or more seeds have germinated, I know I will have a succefful garden using the seeds I saved. "

Mary of Redding, CA - "Having just a small back yard, there is not a whole lot of room for gardening. However, when I start my seeds, I generally start with a good potting mix, small clean containers, (plastic egg cartons work very well)and a heating pad. I wrap the pad in a dry towel, set it to low and place it on my bedroom window sill where it gets the morning sun. After watering the seeds, I place a piece of saran wrap over it until the seeds sprout and rise above the rim. Then remove the saran wrap. By the way, keep the saran wrap loose over your containers. After my seedlings have two good sets of leaves, I transplant either into a larger container or directly into the ground depending on what time of year it is and the type of seedlings. (Peas and such go into the ground after all threat of frost is gone and plants like beans, etc., want the warmer climate and should be planted later, though not too late.)"
