Enjoy the blooms of forced bulbs such as Hyacinth and Amaryllis bulbs that were previously forced in November.

Watch for signs of soft or mold on bulbs if stored over winter. If they have started to rot or decay, remove them and throw them out. (This can occur if moisture gets into storage area.)

Plant tulips after cold treatment (in mild areas) for earlier blooms.

WINTER GARDENING:

Cindy Joy of Laurens, SC - "I will put various bulbs in the refrig. in August...take them out in Novemember and plant in containers and put in light inside or outside on warm days...but Christmas will have lots of flowering goodies!!"

Dan of North Oxford, MA - "By varying bulbs in different size containers and types, one can always have a variety of flowers popping up at different times. Storage and location are keys to vary bloom times"

marilyn of nj - "i use a long bulb inserter..rather than a shovel..grows beautifully"

Sally of Albany, New York - "I like giving Amaryllis bulbs as gifts to myself and others. They often come with a pot and growing medium, but I find that the pot is too light in weight and, as soon as the bulb grows tall, it pulls the whole pot over. I use either the old fashioned clay pot or a ceramic pot for stability and attractiveness."

Mary of So Cal - "I place single daffodil and narcissus bulbs in a narrow necked vase and fill with water till it just touches the root end of the blub. Be sure to fill with water daily. soon dramatic roots shoot to the botton of the vase and the top sprouts and blooms. About 6 weeks. Don't put near heater vent."

gene of rockwood tennessee - "the only thing Ive ever planted that blooms in winter is snow crocus. Just provide them with good soil in the fall, and youll have beautiful flowers in winter, usually during snowcover."

Barb of Ohio - "I force tulip bulbs in Jan. by placing them in a bowl with aquarium gravel, letting the tops of the bulbs stick up about an inch."

Melanie of Winnepeg "If I've forced bulbs in water I plant them in soil as soon as they've finished blooming to regenerate and then I transfer them outside in the spring if their leaves are still green."

Roni of Quinton, NJ - "Tulips, I place them in a pot about 1/4" below the soil. Water and place in cool area inside. Usually a window sill. in about 6 weeks you can see them popping out of the soil. They bloom in the winter indoors. What a pick me up!"
