TIPS FOR GROWING RHODODENRON:

  • The state flower of Washington is the Pacific Rhododendron.

  • March, October and November are the three best months for planting Rhododendron.

  • Feed Rhododendron right after they bloom. They need Nitrogen but it isn't available naturally.

  • Never use mushroom compost on your Rhododenrons because it is high in soluble salts and may damage or kill Rhodos and Azaleas if not used carefully.

According to The Oregon State University - "You can avoid killing or stressing heath family members by mixing mushroom compost with garden soil before using it on young plants. OR order a supply of mushroom compost in the fall and let it sit uncovered, to "cure" over the winter."

  • The insect that causes the most damage to rhododendron is the root weevil. The adults are tiny, dark colored beetles that eat the leaves. The damage to the leaves will affect the plant's appearance but generally won't harm the plant overall. You will have to catch and kill them to get rid of them. The grubs will cause damage to the roots.

  • Rhododendron can be poisonous if ingested. Use caution around children and pets.
